From the engineer

November 17, 2003

To Rad Bennett,

Mobile Fidelity alerted me to your review of the Ravel - Scrowaczewski reissue, formerly on Vox. You really captured what I have been after since starting producing/engineering classical records in 1949. My then boss and later friend and mentor, Fred Wettler in Zurich Switzerland, gave me one very memorable advice concerning setting balances: " Don't just sit there and audition what is coming from the mikes; you have to know beforehand what ideally it should sound like. If it does not, go out and do what you have to do until it does."

Preparing the sessions with score in hand is a must, and working with headphones greatly helps shielding you from sometimes contradicting opinions. Most conductors do not object if the seating of the orchestra is at times changed to avoid the use of additional microphones. The better the orchestration of the piece, the better the given hall is acoustically and the fewer microphones have to be used to achieve the desired balance. In addition, the spatial image of the stage can be retained without adding essentially mono accents in your mix.

Cordially,

Marc Aubort

X-2 Alexandria?

November 14, 2003

Editor,

Great site. I read about the new Wilson Audio X-2 Alexandria over on SoundStage!. If there's an Ultra Audio product, the X-2 is it. I'm wondering if you will be reviewing it. I can't afford a pair, but a guy can dream, can't he?

Joe Pocarro

We will be publishing an article on the X-2 Alexandria -- not a formal review, but a feature that will talk about the speaker's sonics, among other things.
