Which electronics?

April 11, 2007

Editor,

I’ve been reading some of your articles about audio components. I appreciate your writing and your opinion. I think that you are the most competent person who can advise me.

I live in Belgrade, Serbia and I don’t have the opportunity to see and to listen to all the components that I would like to hear. That’s the reason I have decided to ask for your kind opinion about the components that I would like to have in my audio system. I have for loudspeakers Avalon Eidolon Visions and for the source an Esoteric UX-1 Limited, and those components are staying with me. I have a dilemma about the preamplifier and amplifier:

Here is what I'm considering: first, a Jeff Rowland 312 stereo amplifier and new flagship preamplifier, Criterion, that will be available early this summer; second, a Boulder 1060 stereo amplifier and 1010 preamplifier.

What do you think about those two options? Which is better, and what would you choose if you had in mind the rest of my audio components? Your opinion about class D in general and Jeff Rowland’s class-D amps will be highly appreciated.

These days I like Simaudio, Gryphon, and Vitus Audio the most. Over the last number of years I have listened to most of the best solid-state electronics available and looking back these are the brands that, if I were buying today, I’d choose from. I like the gear, the folks that run the companies, and the most of all, the sound that they each made in my listening room. I think any of these company’s products would make fine additions to your system and make those Avalons sound better than ever. As for class D, NuForce has a fine reputation but I have yet to hear their amplifiers in my system….Jeff Fritz

YG coming soon?

April 5, 2007

Editor,

So Jeff, where are you on your evaluation of the YG Acoustics speakers? I live in Asia and shuttle back and forth to Tokyo. I see this speaker selling very well there. Harder to drive than average, but it does have its advantages. Hard to evaluate that, however, in dealer rooms. Any advice?

Michael

My full review of the YG Acoustics Kipod will be published on May 1. In the meantime, I’m not sure if you’ve seen my article, “Searching for the Extreme: YG Acoustics' Yoav Geva on Loudspeaker Design and Measurements.” I think it gives a good taste of what the company is about and what they are trying to achieve….Jeff Fritz
