| Letters -- June 2007 Simaudio stack June 25, 2007 Editor, I read your informative and insightful review of the Simaudio Evolution electronics. Since there is no dealer in the area who has these components for demo purposes, I rely on reviewers like yourself for product/performance descriptions. I am currently thinking of "upgrading" to the Simaudio stack. Right now, I own a Krell FPB-700cx and KCT preamp. I am not sure whether to ditch it all and start over with the Simaudio gear or add a piece at a time, like the Andromeda player initially. After having lived with the Simaudio equipment, how do you feel about it? Do the components stand or their own or is it truly better synergy amongst the amp, preamp and CD player? Parker Your Krells are hardly chopped liver. They are top-flight components with their own considerable strengths. However, the Simaudio stack made quite an impression on me. They are amongst the few components that have come through the system in the last couple of years that I actually considered purchasing. I think that taken as a system, they perform at an incredibly high level, and that is exactly how I would buy them if that were an option. So although adding a single component would no doubt be acceptable, I do think the synergy that the three provide is strong enough to warrant an entire system purchase if that is feasible for you….Jeff Fritz Avalon and YG June 18, 2007 Editor, Do you have an opinion of the $7000 USD Avalon Mixing Monitor vs. the YG Acoustics Kipod Main Module? Jim Romeyn I have not heard the Avalon Mixing Monitor, but have heard many Avalon speakers, though none in my home. When I reviewed the YG Acoustics Kipod I did listen to the Main Module on its own as well. The YG is far more precise, at least as experienced in my room, than any Avalon speaker I have ever heard. If you value soundstage precision, sharp imaging, and extended highs, it might be the right speaker for you. The only caveat would be that it will, on its own, lack bass extension. This may or may not be an issue for you, and YG does provide an upgrade path with the addition of the subwoofer module. You could also pair it with a standalone sub from a different maker as well, though integration would not be as painless. Good luck in your search….Jeff Fritz Speaker comparisons June 8, 2007 Editor, I have always liked that the SoundStage! Network sites do comparisons. I especially appreciated your YG Acoustics Kipod review where you compare it to the Wilson WATT/Puppy 8. Most reviewers would shy away from such comparisons, scared to offend someone, I guess. I would very much like to read more speaker reviews with the models compared directly to those two speakers, which are references of a sort (particularly the Wilsons). Do you have more speaker reviews planned, and if so is the Revel Salon2 one of the models? I’d like to hear how that speaker compares to the YG and Wilson. Brad Jenkins I do have several more speakers coming in soon for review. The next model up is the Ascendo System M-S from Germany, which I’ve heard, and it is highly promising. I’ve just finished up the Rockport Technologies Mira (review to be published on July 1). I will be making the comparisons you ask for, although I do not as of yet have the Salon2 scheduled. I have requested a speaker sample from Revel but as of yet they have not responded. There are lots more speaker reviews coming, however, so stay tuned…Jeff Fritz
